Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories: Level 8 : The Loud Storm
About
Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories: Level 8 – The Loud Storm is a structured decodable reader designed for developing readers learning through the Orton-Gillingham approach.
This Level 8 story builds on previously taught short-vowel words, digraphs, consonant clusters, silent-e words, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, suffixes, and two-syllable words.
Readers practise the diphthongs ou and ow in words such as mouth, out, clouds, loud, ground, down, and howling. The story also provides practice with open-syllable words such as humid and cozy.
Carefully controlled text helps children apply their phonics knowledge to connected reading while building accurate decoding, fluency, confidence, and growing independence.

About the Story
Jen is playing catch with her dog, Fred, on a humid, sunny day. After Fred jumps into the pool, Jen and her sister Kate join in the fun.
Soon the clouds grow dark and a loud storm begins. Jen, Kate, and Fred rush inside as the wind howls, the rain comes down, and lightning fills the sky. When the lamps go out, Mom lights the fire and they make s’mores together.
After the storm passes, they look outside and see fallen branches, wet ground, and a muddy back yard. They stay safely inside and finish the day playing games.
The clear sequence, repeated sentence patterns, and controlled vocabulary give developing readers meaningful practice applying phonics skills in a complete story.
