Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories – Level 8 – The Brown Cow: Structured Literacy Decodable Book (Level 8 Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories 4)
About
Orton-Gillingham Decodable Stories: Level 8 – The Brown Cow is a structured decodable reader designed for developing readers learning through the Orton-Gillingham approach and systematic phonics instruction.
This Level 8 story builds on previously learned short-vowel words, digraphs, consonant clusters, silent-e words, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, suffixes, and two-syllable words.
Readers practise the Level 8 phonics patterns oi, oy, ou, and ow in connected text. Examples include oi in oink, oy in boy, ou in out, loud, and around, and ow in cow, town, brown, and how. Readers also practise open-syllable words such as open, lady, navy, crazy, and human.
Carefully controlled text helps children apply phonics skills while building accurate decoding, fluency, confidence, and reading independence.

About the Story
Alex is staying on a farm when his dad forgets to shut the gate. The cow heads out, followed by a pig, goat, sheep, and five chickens.
The brown cow leads the animals down the road and into town. People watch as the unusual animal parade passes by.
When the animals reach town, people form a human chain to keep them from getting away and use hay and grass to lead them safely back to the farm.
The clear sequence and repeated language provide meaningful phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension practice.
